Our Lady Santa Ana parish in Chinandega, Nicaragua

This church was originally built in 1751 and then renovated into the church you see today in 1885 after a huge earthquake left the former edifice unsound. An interesting thing to note is that the huge doors in the front of the church and in the back, are the original wooden doors from 1751! Pretty neat if you ask me.

As with most older Catholic Churches in Nicaragua, the rule is simple: Go big, or go home. Note the depth of the main aisle, from bottom to top, I estimate it at about 3 stories in altitude. Another intersting feature is the presence of a pulpit, seen above at the right side of the picture.

Close up of the intricately ornate Sacturary.

In the above picture, we were fortunate enough to catch a procession with an icon of the Virgin Mary. As the procession passed us, they were all reciting the rosary and praying for an end to abortion:

Later on, before we left, we were able to snap a pic of evening Mass:

If you look real close, you can see the celebrant in the pulpit giving the homily.
